We are looking for a Photonic Design Engineer with a strong foundation in integrated photonics and hands on experience designing, simulating and implementing photonic circuits and components. Going beyond layout work: You will be tasked with translating device concepts into manufacturable designs, validating them through simulation and ensuring compliance with process design rules.

Activities

Responsibilities

  • PDK and Process Integration:
Work with and extend existing foundry PDKs. Understanding process constraints, design rules and partner specifications and apply them effectively.
  • Photonic Design:
Design, analyze and optimize core photonic components such as waveguides, MMIs, Directional Couplers, Crossings, Filters. Perform device level simulations using EME FDTD and FEM solvers.
  • Layout and Code Review:
Create photonic circuits using programmatic design tools. Review and maintain design code to ensure correctness, hierarchical design, and good code principles for effective team collaboration
  • Design Validation and Optimization:
Implement component models into circuit simulations to evaluate device performance, identify sensitivities to design variables and optimize designs for fabrication tolerances and partner capabilities.

Requirements

Experience

  • Has done (5+) Designs from schematic to tape-out
  • Has worked with various photonics foundries (2+)
  • Worked in a commercial photonic design team for (2+) years

Skills

  • Experience and understanding of photonics Maxwell simulation software (Photon Design, Ansys Lumerical, Cadence Opto-designer)
  • Experience with photonic circuit simulation
  • Programming (python preferred)
  • Programmatic layout design (Nazca, GDS-Factory, GDS-Helper, Luceda IPKISS)
  • Spatial Reasoning and topology
  • PDK design

Knowledge

  • Integrated Photonic Circuits and theory of Photonics
  • Code principles
  • Familiarity with photonic research and literature.
  • Foundry Processes, PDK usage and DRC
  • Understanding of photonics experimental procedures and hardware (Lasers, Diodes, Amplifiers…)

Education

  • At least a Bachelors degree in Physics, Computer Science or any other relevant field
  • Preferred Masters degree in a relevant field
  • Bonus+ PhD in Photonics

Nice to Haves

  • Knowledge and experience with electronic design
