The United Services Automobile Association (USAA) is a mutual insurance company and financial services organization with headquarters in San Antonio, Texas.

In Europe, we primarily provide Motor Vehicle Liability Insurance and Personal Liability Insurance to members stationed across various European countries. Claims arising under these policies are managed by our German branch, USAA EU DAC German Branch, located in Frankfurt.

The Claims Litigation Manager will work alongside two peers and report to the Manager, P&C Litigation Operations.
The primary focus of this role is handling serious bodily injury claims and litigation. This requires profound knowledge of German tort and compensation law, as well as a solid understanding of procedural law. A critical responsibility is the timely assessment of potential claims and the subsequent accurate and prompt posting of reserves.
For losses occurring outside of Germany the Claims Litigation Manager needs to coordinate and collaborate with our agents in other European countries.
As our insureds are primarily U.S. citizens, all communication with them is conducted in English. File documentation and internal correspondence as well as the reporting are also maintained in English.

Tasks

• Determine coverage for losses in line with the policy wording.
• Conduct legal assessment of losses based on liability laws, with a particular focus on traffic and personal liability law.
• Determine appropriate compensation and post accurate reserves for submitted claims.
• Negotiate claims directly with claimants, claimant attorneys, and other stakeholders, such as social security institutions.
• Interpret complex medical reports and maintain a strong understanding of relevant medical terminology.
• Establish a defense for lawsuits directed against USAA and our insureds.
• Initiate and draft recovery lawsuits, primarily related to collision claims.
• Assign, instruct and coordinate with external counsel for matters in litigation.
• Report losses to management, actuaries, and reinsurers in accordance with internal guidelines and contractual agreements.
• Provide regular reports to the head office in San Antonio (U.S.) regarding the legal status and resolution strategies for specific major loss files.
• Independently review and develop solutions for recurring legal issues in insurance, traffic, procedural, and civil law.
• Support the colleagues in the other departments in any matters involving legal questions.

• German First and Second State Exam in Law (Volljurist).
• Experience with handling large Bodily Injury claims.
