Software Engineer (Backend) - (f/m/d)
At Data4Life, we build digital research solutions that advance healthcare and science, backed for the long term by the Hasso Plattner Foundation. You'll tackle complex problems alongside a senior, international team, in a small and expert-dense org where your decisions shape the product from day one. If you want your code to matter and your impact to last, this is the place.
Activities
- Design, build, and ship reliable backend services and APIs — writing maintainable, well-tested code.
- Contribute to software design and architecture decisions, and take part in code reviews.
- Make AI part of how you build — using coding agents and AI tools to move faster, explore ideas, and raise the quality of what we ship.
- Work closely with frontend engineers, QA, and product management as part of an integrated team to deliver well-crafted, user-centered software.
- Engage directly with customers and users — joining feedback sessions and user research to build a deep, end-to-end understanding of the product and the problems it solves.

Must-haves:
- A university degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related discipline.
- Strong development skills in at least one language such as Go (Golang), TypeScript, Rust, or C++.

- Terraform (Infrastructure as Code).

Team
You will be joining our Germany-based Software Engineering team. We work in a highly collaborative, cross-functional environment with short decision-making paths, close knowledge sharing, and a supportive team culture.
Application Process
1. After the initial screening, if we decide to move forward with your application, our Tech Recruiter will contact you to schedule the first interview. This interview focuses on your previous experience, motivation and includes general theoretical technical questions.
2. The next stage is the first coding challenge, which is ideally conducted on-site at on of our offices in Berlin or Potsdam. It assesses your general software engineering skills. If you successfully complete this challenge, you will move on to the second coding challenge, which is tailored to the specific role and technical domain.
3. After successfully completing both coding challenges, you will have a cultural fit interview, where you'll meet a few of your potential future colleagues.
4. If we decide to extend an offer, the final step will be to request 2–3 professional references.
